Goldberg is a freeware image and movie viewer with image editing capabilities. It is offered by its creator as freeware. However, donations are accepted.

You can find Goldberg here: http://mypage.bluewin.ch/opus/freeware/g2/ or here

Download, install, and open the program on your MAC.  On school machines, you must login to an administrative account to install software.

1 - There should be a small floating toolbar with three tools on your desktop.

.

2 - If the toolbar is not there, turn it on by going to [Windows] --> [Show Tools] on the menu bar.

3 - Now open your image.  Go to [File] --> [Open] on the menu bar.

4 - Now browse to your file and click on the "Open" button.  We want our final image to be 150 x 200 pixels, so start with an image larger than that.

5 - Set the Aspect Ratio - (1:1) for 150 x 150 or 200 x 200 and (4:3) for 150 x 200 or 200 x 150.
Go to [Selection] --> [Aspect Ratio] --> [4:3 or 3:4]

6 - Click on the "Selection" tool on the floating toolbar.

7 - Select the area you want to use. We want our final image to be 150 x 200 pixels.  So select an area at least 150 x 200 pixels, larger is better.  If the dotted rectangle is not orientated in the correct direction, hold down the <Option> key on the keyboard while dragging.  To select, click the mouse in the upper left hand corner, then drag the mouse diagonally across the image to the lower right hand corner.  Release the mouse  button.  Note the dotted line around the selected area.

8 - Now go to [Image] --> [Crop] on the menu bar to crop to the dotted box.

9 - Now go to [Image] --> [Resize] on the menu bar.

10 - Type in "150" as the image Width.  The height should automatically change to "200".

11 - Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box.

12 -The conversion is down.  We now need to save it.  Go to [File] --> [Save As...] on the menu bar.
"Save As..." allows us to save the changes with a new name while keeping the original image.

13 - Save it with a recognizable name into a folder that you can find later.  Click the "Save" button.
Note: Photos should be saved as type jpeg, line drawings should be saved as type gif.  Other formats will not work on your web page.

14 - For web publishing a "Medium Quality" image should be sufficient.  The higher the quality, the larger the file. The larger the file, the longer it will take to download and display on your page.  Click on the "OK" button.

2 - Now browse to your file and click on the "Open" button.  We want our final image to be 150 x 200 pixels, so start with an image larger than that.

3 -Click on the "Selection" tool in the toolbar.

4 - Select the area you want to use. We want our final image to be 150 x 200 pixels.  So select an area at least 150 x 200
pixels, larger is better.  To select, click the mouse in the upper left hand corner, then drag the mouse diagonally across the
image to the lower right hand corner.  Release the mouse  button.  Note the dotted line around the selected area.

5 - Go to [Image] --> [Crop to Selection] on the menu bar.

6 -Now go to [Image] --> [Resize] on the menu bar.

7 - I changed the Width to "150".  When you change one number, the other one changes automatically.  Notice that the height is too small ......

8 - Instead I set the Height to "200".  The width changes to "183".  One number wants to be the right size and one wants to be slightly too big or they both can be right on - but never too small.  Click the "OK" button.

9 - Now go to [Image] --> [Canvas Size] on the menu bar.

10 - Set the width to "150" and the Height to "200".  Check the boxes to adjust where the image will be cropped. Now click the "OK" button.

11 - Now go to [File] --> [Save Copy As...] on the menu bar.

12 - Select the file type in the "Save as type" drop down box.  Note: Photos should be saved as type jpeg, line drawings should be saved as type gif.  Other formats will not work on your web page. Type in the new filename and click the "Save" button.
